The American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes are designed to teach you not only the basics in water safety but also the proper protocol when dealing with any emergencies around water. The Red Cross blends both traditional lecture style along with crucial hands-on training in order to teach you effective techniques to deliver prompt care to those in need. After successful completion of the course, participants will be certified in Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid.
This is a blended course; an online component will be issued to you at least 5 days before the course. If you do not receive this email at least five days before the course, please contact srwc.aquatics@unlv.edu.
Prerequisites for the course must be successfully demonstrated on the first day of class. The prerequisites for this course are:
Part 1:
150 yard swim on front (no back or side stroke)
Immediate transition to hands-free 2 minute tread
Immediate transition to 50 yard swim on front ( no back or side stroke)
for a total of 200 yards, with a 2 minute tread between the 150 & final 50 yards.
Part 2:
In under 1 minute and 40 seconds:
Enter the water feet first
Swim on front 15-25 yards
Surface dive (head or feet first) to 9ft depth
Retrieve a 10 pound brick
Return to surface
With both hands on the brick, and keeping the face above the water, kick on back to starting point
Exit the water without a ladder
Note: No refunds will be given to participants once the first day of class has begun. This is a multiple-day course. Participants must attend the entire course to qualify for certification.
