Enjoy an adventure-filled weekend in the fresh mountain air of Big Bear, California! This three-day getaway is the perfect mix of hiking, paddling, and connecting with nature, all with cozy campsite base at Serrano Campground. We'll start with a scenic drive to Big Bear, where we'll set up camp and enjoy a peaceful evening with dinner, s'mores, and mountain views. The next day, we'll kike the beautiful Castle Rock Trail, a 2.7 mile out and back route with stunning lake and forest views. Then, we'll head to one of Big Bear's lakefront spots for a picnic lunch, paddleboarding, swimming, and time to soak up the sun. On our final day, we'll break down camp and visit the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, where you'll get the chance to see rescued and rehabilitated wildlife up close. We'll enjoy a picnic lunch at the zoo before heading back to UNLV, refreshed and recharged from a weekend in the mountains.

Learn how to lead climb and belay with Outdoor Adventures! Join us on the last Thursday of each month for a 3-hour crash course on lead climbing. This course will cover clipping, climbing, and belaying at our rock wall.

Warm up this December with a desert adventure to one of the Southwest's most unique hidden gems! Join Outdoor Adventures as we explore the Arizona Hot Springs on a rewarding 6-mile round-trip hike through unique desert terrain and a breathtaking canyon. Our journey leads to a series of naturally heated hot springs tucked away along the scenic Colorado River, where you'll have the chance to relax and soak while taking in the surrounding canyon views. This moderately challenging hike is perfect for those looking to experience a combination of adventure and relaxation in the heart of the Mojave Desert. This trip includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and food.

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding classes are designed to teach you not only the basics in water safety but also the proper protocol when dealing with any emergencies around water. The Red Cross blends both traditional lecture style and crucial hands-on training in order to teach you effective techniques to deliver prompt care to those in need. After successful completion of the course, participants will be certified in Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid.

This is a blended course; an online component will be issued to you at least 5 days before the course. If you do not receive this email at least five days before the course, please contact srwc.aquatics@unlv.edu.

Prerequisites for the course must be successfully demonstrated on the first day of class. The prerequisites for this course are:
Part 1:
150-yard swim on front (no back or side stroke)
Immediate transition to hands-free 2-minute tread
Immediate transition to 50-yard swim on front ( no back or side stroke)
for a total of 200 yards, with a 2-minute tread between the 150 & final 50 yards.
Part 2:
In under 1 minute and 40 seconds:
Enter the water feet first
Swim on front 15-25 yards
Surface dive (head or feet first) to 9ft depth
Retrieve a 10-pound brick
Return to the surface
With both hands on the brick, and keeping the face above the water, kick on back to the starting point
Exit the water without a ladder

September 12: 9:00 am-5:00 pm
September 13: 10:00 am-7:00 pm

Note: No refunds will be given to participants once the first day of class has begun. This is a multiple-day course. Participants must attend the entire course to qualify for certification.

What to Expect

Our swimming classes for kids are tailored to each child's needs, so they can progress at a comfortable pace. And although some children may advance more quickly or slowly, our instructors ensure that everyone receives the instruction they need.

What They'll Learn

The Learn-to-Swim program focuses on building skills one step at a time. By allowing them to master one element before moving on to the next, our kids' swim classes make it easy to build confidence in the water.

During their swim lessons, children will spend time on the following six levels:

Parent/Child: Designed to familiarize children between the ages of 6 months & 3 years with the water and teach them swimming readiness skills. This level will provide safety information for parents and teach techniques that parents can use to orient their children to the water.
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills: Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it.
Level 2: Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills: Children will learn basic swimming skills.
Level 3: Stroke Development: Additional guided practice will help students improve their skills.
Level 4: Next Wave Rebels Stroke Improvement: Kids will gain confidence during swim lessons, improve their stroke, and gain additional aquatic skills.

Please arrive 10 minutes early for your scheduled class. We ask that you rinse off before entering the pool. All children who are not 100% potty-trained must wear swim diapers.

Cost: $50/ session (Session includes four 30-minute lessons. Must hold a current membership. This price does not include membership or parking fees.)

Parking is not included in our swim lesson fees. The most convenient parking is located in the Tropicana Parking Garage. This lot has signs indicating that parking can be paid for via cell phone.
